According to the *Sutra of Akasagarbha Bodhisattva*, Akasagarbha comes from the Buddha land of All Fragrance Assembly in the west, where the Buddha is named Surapushpagarba Tathagata. The Bodhisattva possesses immense merits, deep meditation, pure precepts and boundless wisdom. The *Mahavaipulya Mahasamnipata Sutra* describes him like a wealthy elder with inexhaustible treasures. Out of compassion, he bestows treasures and supplies to relieve suffering beings. In Esoteric Buddhism, the famous Gumonji practice is dedicated to Akasagarbha for enhancing memory and understanding scriptures. This practice was introduced to Japan in Tang Dynasty, and Kukai, the great master, practiced this dharma. In folk zodiac guardian belief, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva is the guardian Bodhisattva for people born in the Year of Ox and Tiger.
