In the Tang Dynasty, there was a young man named Wei Gu. One night when he passed through Songcheng, he saw an elderly white-haired man sitting under moonlight reading a book, with a cloth bag beside him. Curious, Wei Gu asked who he was. The old man said he was Yue Lao, the Matchmaker God, who kept the marriage register for all people in the world. Inside the bag were red silk threads. Once the threads tie the feet of a man and a woman, even if they live thousands of miles apart or come from totally different backgrounds, they will eventually become spouses. No one can change this fate. Wei Gu asked about his future wife. Yue Lao told him it was an infant girl held by an old vegetable seller at the market. Wei Gu did not believe it and sent someone to hurt the baby girl. Many years later, Wei Gu got married. He noticed his wife had a scar above her eyebrow. She was exactly that little girl. Wei Gu finally realized marriage fate is predestined, and the red thread tied by Yue Lao is hard to break. Later generations honor him as Yue Lao. People pray to Yue Lao for good romantic relationships and to remove obstacles in love.
