Thousand-Hand Guanyin (千手观音)

She guards people born in the Year of Rat, dispels disasters, illnesses and evil obstacles, keeps devotees away from accidents and troubles, brings peace and good fortune, and fulfills virtuous wishes. Sincere worship can gain four merits: disaster elimination, fortune increase, harmonious relationships and subduing negative forces.

Story

According to the *Great Compassion Dharani Sutra*, Avalokitesvara once listened to the preaching of Buddha Prabhakara in ancient kalpas and made a great vow: if she could bring benefits and peace to all beings, she would immediately manifest thousand hands and thousand eyes. Right after the vow, her body turned into Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara. A folk legend tells that Princess Miaoshan sacrificed her hands and eyes to cure her father. Moved by her filial piety, heavenly gods blessed her with thousand hands and thousand eyes. Thousand-Armed Guanyin saves beings with the Great Compassion Mantra and serves as the left attendant of Amitabha Buddha among the Western Three Saints. In folk belief, she is the guardian Bodhisattva for people born in the Year of Rat.
