Acalanatha, also known as Acala or Fudo Myoo, is the foremost of the Five Great Wisdom Kings in Esoteric Buddhism. He is the manifestation of Vairocana Buddha to deliver the Dharma edict. The name "Immovable" means his compassionate essence remains unshaken by worldly distractions. His terrifying fierce appearance is not anger, but a powerful form to subdue inner demons and evil spirits and awaken deluded beings. He made a mighty vow: Whoever sees my form shall awaken Bodhicitta; whoever hears my name shall cease evil and practice virtue; whoever hears my Dharma shall gain great wisdom; whoever knows my mind can attain Buddhahood in this body. Legend tells that he subdued the arrogant Maheshvara and guided him toward the true path. In folk zodiac guardian belief, Acala is the guardian bodhisattva for those born in the Year of the Rooster, protecting them to cut off karmic obstacles, strengthen resolve and overcome hardships.
