Story

Countless eons ago, Amitabha was once a king. Witnessing the suffering of all living beings, he renounced his throne and became a monk named Dharmākara. Before the Buddha, he made forty-eight great vows to build a pure land free of suffering and full of bliss — the Western Pure Land. After lengthy cultivation and accumulating boundless merits, he attained Buddhahood and became Amitabha Buddha. Those who sincerely recite his name receive protection from his boundless light and may be escorted to the Pure Land at the end of life. In folk zodiac belief, Amitabha Buddha is the guardian Buddha for people born in the Year of the Dog and Pig, shielding believers of these two zodiacs from troubles and growing fortune and wisdom. Together with Guanyin Bodhisattva and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, they are known as the Three Saints of the West.
