Lord Zhuyi is the deity in charge of literary fortune. The famous tale is "The Red Robe Immortal Nods". It is said that Ouyang Xiu of the Song Dynasty presided over imperial examination marking. Every time he read an excellent essay, he seemed to see a deity in red robes nodding secretly. If the Red Robe Immortal nodded, the candidate would pass the exam. Later, "the red robe immortal nods" became an idiom meaning success in examinations. Folk beliefs hold that Lord Zhuyi reviews students’ writings and inspects their morality. He assists Emperor Wenchang to govern the literary fortune of the world. Ancient scholars going to take imperial exams often worshipped him, praying for recognition in the test.
